Trekking Phu Sa Phìn – Formerly Known as Tà Xùa | Conquer the 2,868m Summit

Trekking Phu Sa Phìn is an adventure to one of the most iconic mountain peaks in Northwestern Vietnam, formerly widely known as Tà Xùa Peak. Standing at approximately 2,868m, Phu Sa Phìn is the highest peak of the Tà Xùa mountain range, located in the mountainous region between Son La and Lao Cai.

Phu Sa Phìn is famous for its spectacular combination of the Dinosaur Backbone, Turtle Head rock formation, sea of clouds, and ancient moss-covered forests.

This trekking route is ideal for those who love high mountains, want to challenge themselves on long and steep trails, and seek unforgettable moments among the clouds and pristine forests of Northwestern Vietnam.

Phu Sa Phìn is the current name of the mountain peak that the trekking community previously knew as Tà Xùa. The name was restored to distinguish the mountain peak from Tà Xùa Commune in Bắc Yên, Sơn La.

1. Highlights of Phu Sa Phìn

The greatest attraction of Phu Sa Phìn lies in the combination of dramatic high-altitude landscapes and ancient forest ecosystems.

Throughout the trek, you will pass through old-growth forests filled with moss-covered trees, steep mountain trails and exposed ridgelines offering panoramic views over the surrounding mountains of Northwestern Vietnam.

🦖 The Dinosaur Backbone

One of the most iconic landmarks on the Phu Sa Phìn trekking route. The narrow trail follows a dramatic mountain ridge, with steep slopes on both sides, creating the feeling of walking along the back of a giant dinosaur above a sea of clouds.

🐢 Turtle Head Rock

A distinctive rock formation protruding from the mountain ridge, resembling the head of a giant turtle. It is one of the most recognizable photo spots along the route.

🌫️ Sea of Clouds

On favorable weather days, trekkers can enjoy a spectacular sea of clouds stretching beneath the mountain ridges, especially around sunrise and early morning.

🌿 Ancient Moss Forest

One of the most magical experiences on Phu Sa Phìn is trekking through the ancient forest covered in thick green moss. Centuries-old trees wrapped in moss create an atmospheric landscape that feels almost like stepping into a fairytale forest.

If Tà Chì Nhù is famous for its sea of clouds and Chi Pâu flowers, and Samu is known for its pristine ancient forest, Phu Sa Phìn brings together the Dinosaur Backbone, Turtle Head, sea of clouds and magnificent moss-covered forests in one unforgettable journey.

2. Elevation and Difficulty

Phu Sa Phìn stands at approximately 2,868m and is the highest peak of the Tà Xùa mountain range.

Depending on the trekking route, the difficulty level and distance may vary. Some popular routes cover approximately 22km round trip.

Phu Sa Phìn can be accessed from different directions. The Hang Chú route is generally considered more accessible, while the Trạm Tấu route is known for the Dinosaur Backbone and more challenging terrain.

The challenge of Phu Sa Phìn comes not only from its elevation, but also from its long uphill sections, constantly changing terrain and the endurance required throughout the trek.

3. Best Time to Trek Phu Sa Phìn

October – December: Moss Forest & Cloud Hunting

Cooler temperatures and higher humidity create ideal conditions for the lush green moss forests that Phu Sa Phìn is famous for.

This is a great period for travelers who want to experience the mysterious beauty of the ancient forest while also having opportunities for cloud hunting.

February – April: Rhododendron Season

During spring, rhododendron flowers may bloom throughout the ancient forest, adding vibrant colors to the lush green landscape.

This is also a popular period for exploring the mountain trails and enjoying the changing scenery of the highlands.

Winter: Sea of Clouds

On cold and favorable-weather days, Phu Sa Phìn can offer spectacular seas of clouds stretching beneath the mountain ridges.

In particular, sunrise along the Dinosaur Backbone is one of the most memorable experiences of the trek.

Rainy Season: Extra Caution Required

Rain can make mountain trails muddy and slippery, especially on steep sections and within the moss-covered forest. Clouds and fog may also significantly reduce visibility.

Sea of clouds, flowers and weather conditions are all natural phenomena and therefore cannot be guaranteed on every trip.

4. What to Pack for Trekking Phu Sa Phìn?

Essential items include:

  • Trekking shoes with good grip
  • Windproof and warm clothing
  • Personal rain jacket
  • Lightweight trekking backpack
  • Drinking water and electrolytes
  • Hat and gloves
  • Sunscreen
  • Headlamp or flashlight
  • Power bank
  • Trekking poles if needed
  • Personal first-aid supplies and medication
  • Dry clothes for changing

Good-grip footwear is especially important because the route includes steep slopes, rocks, dirt trails and damp forest sections, which can become slippery in wet conditions.

Avoid carrying unnecessary items. A lightweight backpack will help you conserve energy during the long uphill sections.

5. Fitness Requirements

Phu Sa Phìn is suitable for travelers with moderate to good fitness levels who are comfortable with long-distance hiking.

If you have little or no high-altitude trekking experience, prepare before the trip by:

  • Walking or running regularly
  • Practicing stair climbing
  • Going on long-distance hikes
  • Training with a backpack
  • Gradually increasing your training duration and intensity

Rather than focusing on speed, prioritize endurance and maintaining a steady pace throughout the trek.

Trekking is not a race. Choose a pace that matches your fitness level and always prioritize safety.

6. Health & Safety Notes

For safety reasons, participants should be in good physical condition and should not have serious medical conditions related to the heart, blood pressure or respiratory system, or any condition that may affect their ability to undertake prolonged physical activity.

If you have any health concerns, consult your doctor before joining the trek.

During the journey:

  • Follow instructions from your leader/porter
  • Do not leave the group without permission
  • Avoid running or pushing on narrow ridgelines
  • Take extra care when crossing the Dinosaur Backbone
  • Never stand too close to cliff edges for photos
  • Do not enter unfamiliar trails
  • Carry enough water and essential personal items

First-time trekkers are strongly advised to join the route with an experienced leader, porter or local guide familiar with the terrain.

7. Phu Sa Phìn – A Journey Beyond the Summit

Phu Sa Phìn is more than a 2,868m summit.

It is a journey through long mountain climbs, ancient moss-covered forests, dramatic ridgelines and spectacular viewpoints above the clouds.

There will be moments when you ask yourself:

“Why did I sign up for this trek?”

But when the first sunlight paints the surrounding mountains golden, when a sea of clouds stretches beneath your feet and your entire group finally stands together on the summit, you will understand the answer.

Phu Sa Phìn may leave your legs exhausted.

But the memories created along the way will stay with you for a very long time.
