Trekking Nhiu Co San is a 2-day adventure to conquer one of the most impressive high-altitude peaks in Northwestern Vietnam. Standing at 2,965m, Nhiu Co San Peak is located in Bat Xat District, Lao Cai Province, within the Hoang Lien Son mountain range.
What makes Nhiu Co San special is its constantly changing landscapes. Throughout the journey, trekkers pass through ancient forests, moss-covered trees, bamboo forests, streams, waterfalls and open mountain slopes. The scenery changes so dramatically that the trek feels like experiencing all four seasons in a single journey.
One of the highlights of the route is Ong Chua Waterfall, a spectacular waterfall surrounded by pristine mountain forests. 💦 Ong Chua Waterfall
Ong Chua Waterfall is one of the signature attractions of the Nhiu Co San trekking route. Water cascades down the mountainside into the lush forest, creating a spectacular scene that combines the power of nature with the tranquility of the surrounding wilderness.
🌿 Ancient & Moss-Covered Forests
The trail takes you through diverse forest landscapes, including ancient forests, moss-covered trees, bamboo forests and cardamom plantations.
The scenery changes continuously throughout the trek, making every section of the trail feel different.
🌫️ Sea of Clouds
At an altitude approaching 3,000m, Nhiu Co San offers excellent opportunities to experience a sea of clouds when weather conditions are favorable.
Watching sunrise above the clouds is one of the most memorable moments of the journey.

During periods of intense cold, frost may appear at higher elevations. Trees and vegetation can become covered in a thin layer of ice, creating a beautiful and unusual winter landscape.
Frost, flowers and seas of clouds are natural phenomena and depend entirely on weather conditions, so they cannot be guaranteed on every trip.

3. Best Time to Trek Nhiu Co San
October – November | Autumn Forests
Late autumn brings cooler weather and changing colors in the forest. Some maple trees may turn yellow and red, creating beautiful scenery along the trail.
December – February | Clouds & Frost
Winter is ideal for those who enjoy cold mountain weather. During strong cold spells, trekkers may have a chance to see frost-covered forests.
Clear, cold mornings can also offer excellent conditions for cloud hunting.
February – April | Rhododendron Season
Spring brings warmer temperatures and the possibility of seeing rhododendron flowers blooming among the ancient forests.
Rainy Season | Extra Caution Required
Rain can make the trails muddy and slippery, especially on steep sections, rocky terrain and stream crossings.
Weather conditions in the mountains can change quickly. Always follow the guidance of your trekking leader and prepare appropriate equipment.
4. What to Bring
For a comfortable and safe trekking experience, we recommend preparing:
- Trekking shoes with good grip
- Windproof jacket and thermal layers
- Quick-dry trekking pants
- Hat, beanie, gloves and scarf
- 3–5 pairs of socks
- Personal rain jacket
- Headlamp or flashlight
- Power bank
- Personal toiletries
- Slippers for the homestay or campsite
- Energy snacks such as chocolate, candy and jelly
- Personal medication and basic first-aid supplies
- Hand warmers during winter
- Knee support if you are not accustomed to long-distance hiking
Choose trekking shoes that fit securely and comfortably. Avoid shoes that are too loose, especially on steep descents.
5. Fitness Requirements
Nhiu Co San is a challenging trekking route and is best suited to people with moderate to good physical fitness and previous experience with long-distance hiking.
Before the trip, we recommend:
- Walking or running regularly
- Practicing stair climbing
- Going on long-distance hikes
- Training with a backpack
- Gradually increasing your exercise intensity
- Getting used to continuous physical activity for several hours
The goal is not to walk as fast as possible. Maintaining a steady pace and managing your energy are much more important.
Trekking is not a race. Listen to your body, maintain a comfortable pace and prioritize safety throughout the journey.
6. Health & Safety
Participants should be in good physical condition and should not have serious medical conditions involving the heart, blood pressure or respiratory system, or any condition that may affect their ability to undertake prolonged physical activity.
If you have any health concerns, please consult your doctor before joining the trek.
